Bicyclist dead after hit-and-run collision in downtown Gainesville

Driver of car that killed him not yet identified by police

A bicyclist died Monday morning after being hit by a car on Gainesville’s South Main Street. The body was later discovered by a passerby.

Gainesville Police Department officers arrived to the 3300 block of South Main Street at 9:38 a.m.  in response to a hit-and-run collision, according to a GPD press release.

A bystander found vehicle and bicycle debris on the west side of the road and sidewalk, the release wrote. The bicyclist’s body was found in the wooded area near the debris.

As of Monday evening, GPD hasn’t responded to requests for comment on the incident.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead on scene, but the driver of the car who killed him is yet to be identified by police.

GPD investigation reveals the bicyclist was traveling southbound in the curbside lane when he was hit from behind by a silver Volvo also traveling south, according to the report. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, and additional details of the car are unknown.
