Next time you’re considering being the responsible friend, it might be a better idea to reach for that next beer.

A study conducted by Pennsylvania State University researchers found those who attended college eventually developed a more responsible relationship with alcohol compared with those who didn’t.

Maureen Miller, director of GatorWell Health Promotion Services, said she thinks these results show many college students are so focused and driven, alcohol doesn’t play a large role in their priorities or in their lives.

College, in general, has a reputation for unsupervised partying, but Miller said she thinks these types of things really depend more on the type of person someone is.

Kaley Thomas, a 19-year-old UF psychology freshman, said she was surprised by the results because she knows a lot of students who started drinking after they got to college.

“Most students are finally on their own for the first time and go wild with the freedom,” she said.

UF criminology senior Claudia Cobreiro, 22, said she realizes how true the results could be.

“I understand how, in this economy, people with less education can succumb to alcoholism as a means of escaping the problems they may face,” she said.
