Will a new modeling agency make a new mark on the fashion industry with its mission statement?
You’re either a “straight-size” (0-2) or “plus-sized” (12-16) model when it comes to most agencies, but the Jag modeling agency aims to break down these categories and represent girls of all sizes.
Gary Dakin and Jaclyn Sarka, former Ford agents and co-directors of Ford’s plus board, are the ones behind this revolutionary concept.
Jag doesn’t want to limit itself to represent only one particular size.
“The average size of girls [we represent] is a 14/16 but there are 10s and there are 18s and if there’s a size 8 or a size 6 that we fall in love with we’ll take them on,” Dakin told Fashionista.
“We’re not going to limit ourselves, because the industry shouldn’t be limiting to anybody,” Dakin went on to say. I couldn’t have said it any better myself.
I’ve never agreed with how this industry has a way of excluding women and making them feel as if they have to be straight size to feel beautiful and worthy of wearing certain clothing.
Just like most people, I used to think plus size meant fat, but that’s not the case at all. The average American woman would probably be considered a plus-sized model among most agencies.
It would be a breath of fresh air to see more healthy and full-figured girls on the covers of magazines and advertisements.
Maybe this will begin to show younger girls that they are fine just the way they are and that they don’t need to conform to one standard size to be considered beautiful by the rest of the world.
So far, Jag represents 30 models ranging in different sizes including Jennie Runk, Kaela Humphries and Kamie Crawford.
Runk told Fashionsita that she hopes to speak out about body image and become an inspiration for young women while at Jag.
There is still a lot of growing and changing that need to be made with the rest of the industry for this concept to fully take affect, but I think this is a great first step.
I can’t wait to see what this new agency has in store for us and hope other agencies will follow Jag’s example.
A woman is beautiful no matter what size or shape she is and it’s time we begin to make that the rule not the exception.
