More than 40 UF vendors, including Canon, Verizon Wireless and FedEx, showcased their environmentally friendly products Tuesday at the third annual Sustainable Products Trade Show.

The event was designated to support the campus sustainability initiatives and to make UF students, faculty and staff aware of products that will help the environment.

It was held in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom and hosted by the UF Purchasing Department.

"We wanted to have the trade show right before Earth Day to create awareness about the initiatives and the campus's commitment to improve the environment," said program coordinator and political science junior Melissa Karr. "We definitely see sustainability as a realistic goal."

Attendees visited the different vendors who displayed their products and services.

Printing company StorterChilds presented a display on its paper, which is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The certification ensures that the paper came from trees cut down in accordance with standards to help forest conservation.

Verizon Wireless, a company that recycles phones used by customers, showcased its cell phones. Jill Miranda, account executive for Verizon Wireless, said that through its HopeLine program, the company has recycled thousands of cell phones to provide funding for domestic violence shelters.

CLARIFICATION

Dr. Bruce Kone, dean of UF's College of Medicine, stated in Friday's Alligator that nearly 10 percent of UF's entering medical school class has not taken the MCAT. Students in the Junior Honors Medical Program, a combined seven-year bachelor's and medical degree program, are not required to take the MCAT. UF spokeswoman Janine Sikes said Kone told her he included the Junior Honors Medical Program students in his statistic.
