The Gators are rolling, and they don’t appear to be slowing down any time soon.
The No. 5 Florida women’s tennis team extended its win streak to 11 matches after clinching a 4-3 victory over No. 15 Texas A&M Tuesday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, keeping UF undefeated in conference play.
With the match tied 3-3 and only one court still playing, UF freshman and Texas native Peggy Porter secured the win for the Gators, defeating Texas A&M’s Stefania Hristov 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) on Court 6.
"It came down to Peggy in her home state, and as a freshman in that environment, to be able to come through after a back-and-forth battle was really, really fantastic," coach Roland Thornqvist said in a release.
"It’s something you can’t prepare for and she just showed great toughness today to be able to close it out for the Gators."
The Aggies (8-4, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) entered the match with five-consecutive wins, but the Gators (16-1, 8-0 SEC) proved to be too much for the them to handle.
Florida started singles play with a 1-0 disadvantage after dropping the doubles point for the first time since its match against Alabama on Feb. 27.
The No. 31-ranked pairing of Josie Kuhlman and Porter fell to Texas A&M’s Rutujua Bhosale and Saska Gavrilovska, 8-5.
The 54th-ranked duo of Spencer Liang and Belinda Woolcock fell to the Aggies pairing of Eva Paalma and Rachel Pierson, 8-6.
In singles play, Florida earned wins from Brooke Austin, Kourtney Keegan and Josie Kuhlman before Porter clinched the victory.
