Joanna Mather finished her first fall at UF with a win against Carolina Escamilla of Kentucky 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in the finals of the SEC Fall Coaches Classic.
The victory gave the freshman her first collegiate singles title.
Mather won two matches Friday to get to the finals the next day. In the first round, Mather downed Nicole Kantor of LSU 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The next round brought No. 56 Courtney Ulery of Vanderbilt, whom Mather made quick work of 6-4, 6-3.
Barbara Pinterova joined Mather at the Coaches Classic, losing in the first round to No. 102 Cameron Ellis of Georgia 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-2.
Meanwhile, in Charlottesville, Va., No. 67 Marrit Boonstra fell just short of beating No. 6 Maria Mosolova of Northwestern. Boonstra took the first set and was tied at 5 in the third, but could not close the match out and lost 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.
This weekend marked the last tournaments of the fall semester, which consists solely of individual competitions. The team will resume play Jan. 16 at the Freeman Memorial in Las Vegas, Nev.
