Team of engineering students selected for national spotlight

Five UF Theta Tau fraternity brothers have been selected to join a newly formed all-academic team for their scholastic and service-related achievements.

The team was created by the Theta Tau Educational Foundation to honor local chapter members at a national level and to create a process for considering nominees for a new scholarship, said executive director Michael Abraham.

Material science and engineering student Tyler Martin, industrial and systems engineering students Michael Silberling and Katharine Johnson, mechanical engineering student Madeline Sullivan and chemical engineering student Steven Geller were selected to represent UF based on their GPAs and active involvement in the fraternity.

“The all-academic team is a program designed to recognize those who excel academically in the very challenging engineering discipline,” Abraham said.

With an average GPA of 3.6, the 90 students selected nationwide for the all-academic team are expected to be an example to their chapters, he said.

Students named to the team are separated into eight regions. One person from each region will be chosen as team captain and will receive a $250 scholarship, Abraham said.

Martin, who is also UF’s chapter president, said he received an application for the team in November and sent it along to his fellow members.

He said he believes that all of the honorees from UF have an equal chance to win the scholarship.

“I know we have some really hard-working brothers,” Martin said. “I thought UF could receive some recognition through us.”
