Alachua County experienced its second death from the H1N1 virus, known as swine flu, this week.
The Alachua County Health Department suggested in a press release that pre-existing health problems may have made the 82-year-old man, whose name was not released, more vulnerable to the disease.
Although swine flu cases are normally mild, some people, especially children and the elderly, experience severe cases.
Jean Munden, administrator of the ACHD, said that the county is continuing to receive and investigate reports of flu transmission.
"Our deepest sympathies are extended to family and friends," Munden said in the release. "[We] urge citizens to exercise precautions against infection."
The Florida Department of Health reported that 670 people statewide have been hospitalized with cases of the swine flu.
Four of the cases reported were in Alachua County.
There have been 9,079 people hospitalized for the virus in the U.S. and U.S. territories, and 593 people have died, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
