The Gators’ women’s tennis team finished with 17-0 on Day 1 at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals.

Friday began a four-day tournament at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Six of the seven competing Gators entered the tournament ranked in the top 16, with Sofie Oyen second, Alexandra Cercone fourth, Brianna Morgan ninth, Olivia Janowicz 12th, Belinda Woolcock 15th and Kourtney Keegan 16th.

Not only did the Gators play up to their high rankings, but they were relentless in each of their matches. None of the 14 singles matches went to three sets. UF gave up less than four games in all but one set.

“This is the best day we’ve ever had a regionals,” coach Roland Thornqvist said.

“We were incredibly consistent in our play all day. All seven are playing at an incredible level.”

The ladies won two rounds of singles in the 64-player draw, and three UF doubles teams won during the first-round in the 32-team draw.

After a strong start, Thornqvist and the Gators are excited about Day 2 of regionals.

“It’s a big day tomorrow,” he said. It’s like golf’s ‘moving day’ and I’m excited for it and to see us back on the court.”

The USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals will begin Saturday with main doubles, followed by doubles quarterfinals, main singles consolation, main singles, and B singles quarterfinals.
