As a three-time UF graduate, I have 10 summer semesters under my belt. Next to fall, it is my favorite time in Gainesville because it has many benefits over the regular season.

One significant advantage is much less traffic on campus and a generally slower pace getting around. The alert student can take advantage of the fact that everyone is too hot to move very fast.

You must always wear sunglasses.

Another is that most professors don’t want to be there, so some of them will cut you slack — but don’t count on it. My worst mistake was taking differential equations during Summer B. Keep the workload light, you deserve it.

And because Gainesville is so stinking hot, frequent trips to the springs or the beach are that much more fun. Just remember to treat the locals with respect because — regardless of your state of mind — you are a Gator.

Summer lets you burn the candle at both ends and have too much fun with less at stake. It’s excellent preparation for the fall, when you will have many opportunities to get your butt in a sling big time.

Just don’t forget the sunglasses.
