Gators falter in second round of SEC Championship

Florida sits in ninth place entering the final round of competition

The Gators struggled in the second round of the SEC Championship and shot 4-over-par Thursday.

The team’s tournament total stands at 5-under-par. Addie Baggarly continued to pace Florida. 

The senior carded a 1-over-par 73 and knocked in two birdies. She’s now 3-under-par for the tournament and ties for 22nd, only seven strokes off South Carolina’s Pauline Roussin-Bouchard.

Baggarly scored well on the par-4s over the two days of competition. She averaged 3.85 strokes per hole for a total of 3-under-par. She has knocked in the fourth-most pars (25) and seven birdies.

Maisie Filler posted the best score for Florida in round two. The freshman shot 1-under-par Thursday to bring her total for the tournament to 1-under-par. She knocked down five birdies with four bogeys and ties  for 34th entering Friday.

Sophomore Annabell Fuller stumbled Thursday. After a 3-under-par performance in round one, the English national shot 2-over-par in the second round. 

Fuller hit in three birdies and two bogeys on the front nine and entered the back half of the course at 1-under-par. However, she carded two double bogeys on the back nine to bring her day total to 2-over-par. She ties for 34th.

Sophomore Marina Escobar also shot 2-over-par Thursday and sits in a tie for 40th. Escobar carded four bogeys in the first 10 holes of the second round, but knocked in two birdies to redeem her day. Finally, senior Lauren Waidner shot a 2-over-par 74 and tiesfor 53rd.

Statistically, Florida’s performance was mediocre over the two days of competition. The Gators carded the seventh-most birdies (35) and the eighth-most pars (115) through the first two rounds. They averaged 4.80 on par-5s, good for eighth best on the course. 

The Gators need a major comeback entering Friday. They lay  23 strokes behind the leading LSU Tigers.
