Stores on the UF campus stopped selling peanut butter products listed on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's voluntary recall list in connection with the salmonella outbreak caused by Peanut Corporation of America's tainted peanut butter and peanut paste, according to Lionel Dubay, UF's director of business services division.
Food suppliers to UF's bookstores identified about 10 snack items in stock that were on the recall list, he said.
Campus convenience stores like those at Little and Pugh halls stopped selling some recalled snack items including certain crackers and protein bars.
The cost will be absorbed by UF's suppliers, Dubay said.
Meanwhile, campus dining halls have not changed their menus. Suppliers have assured UF that its peanut butter, purchased in bulk containers, is safe to eat, Dubay said.
No products have been pulled from campus vending machines.
"The salmonella outbreak has had minimal impact on our vendors and the university," Dubay said.
As of Wednesday, 432 recalled peanut butter products have been identified, according to the FDA, and 501 infected people have been reported from 43 states, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Florida hasn't reported any cases of related illness.
