The Florida baseball team took a hit from which it might take some time to recover.
Sophomore first baseman and outfielder Peter Alonso broke his foot during practice on Tuesday, as first reported by Fightin’ Gators and later confirmed by UF, and will be out for the foreseeable future.
UF did not provide a timetable for Alonso’s return to the lineup.
Alonso has been a member of Florida’s starting lineup since Opening Day of the 2014 season.
The Tampa native started in 58 games last season — 30 as the designated hitter, 24 at first base and four at third base — and saw action in two more games during his freshman year.
Alonso earned a spot on the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team as well as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association’s Freshman All-American second team after batting .264 with 32 RBI, 19 walks, 18 runs, six doubles, four homers and two triples.
He also landed a spot on Perfect Game’s Summer Collegiate All-America first team after finishing second in the Northwoods League in home runs (18), third in batting average (.354) and fifth in RBI (53) while playing for the Madison (Wis.) Mallards.
Florida opens its 2015 season on Friday with a three-game series against Rhode Island.
