UF is making space for a new innovative space for the humanities.

The Smathers Libraries are celebrating the opening of the Scott Nygren Scholars Studio on Monday.

The studio is a collaborative space in Library West for students, faculty and researchers to design and create digital advances within the humanities field. The space is equipped with new technology and will encourage teamwork.

Laurie Taylor, the digital scholarship librarian at UF, said the studio will be beneficial for campus.

“It provides a collaborative space for people who are already doing digital humanities and digital scholarship work,” she said, “and it gives them more technology for doing that work.”

The studio was named in honor of the late UF English professor Scott Nygren, who passed away in March 2014. The project took about a year.

“This was a really nice opportunity to honor and remember (Nygren) and remember his spirit,” Taylor said.

Kenneth Kidd, the UF English department chairman, wrote in an email that Nygren was a beloved teacher who promoted innovation and collaboration.

“It is the kind of enterprise that Professor Nygren loved and embodied,” he said, “and we hope that users of the space will continue his legacy of intellectual invention and social commitment.”

The opening celebration will be from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in Room 212.
