Tied with “Roma” for the most Oscar nominations this year, this historical drama depicts the age-old tale of family members battling to be the most loved and the best.
Taking place in the 1800s, “The Favourite” follows cousin Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) and Abigail Hill (Emma Stone) who are now in competition with each other to be the most trusted of the monarchy for the fortune.
Taking place in 1711, Queen Anne appointed Hill to be Keeper of the Privy Purse, reversing the fortunes that were originally going to Sarah Churchill, who was once one of the queen’s most trusted advisers.
Throughout the film, Hill and Churchill engage in different comedic acts and contents vying for Queen Anne’s affection with no guidelines or rules to declare a true winner.
The rated-R film not only did well during its first week of release, but it has also continued to get large numbers in the box office after its Golden Globe nomination. However, some history buffs have criticized the film’s inaccuracies.
