A UF student died early Tuesday evening after she was hit by a car while riding her bike.
Carmen Peterson, a 20-year-old recreation sports and tourism sophomore from Fort Lauderdale, was hit at about 5 p.m., UF spokesman Steve Orlando said.
The accident occurred on County Road 325 near the intersection with County Road 2082 past Southeast Hawthorne Road, according to a traffic crash report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
Orlando said he didn't know any other details of the crash or whether Peterson was wearing a helmet.
Representatives from Florida Highway Patrol were preparing a release Tuesday night, but it was not ready by press time.
A person who answered the phone at a number listed for Peterson's Fort Lauderdale home declined to comment for this story.
In an e-mail Tuesday night, College of Health and Human Performance Dean Steve Dorman wrote, "I did not know Ms. Peterson, but we grieve with her family and we are remembering them in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time."
