Gainesville Police are investigating a homicide that occurred Monday night in the Pine Ridge neighborhood.
At about 10:15 p.m., GPD received multiple 911 calls regarding a shooting in front of 2425 NW 57th Place, according to a press release.
Reports said a man was shot and the gunman had run away.
Officers arrived shortly after and found James L. “JoJo” Rentz, 37, on the ground with gunshot wounds, according to the press release. Police attempted to give him emergency first aid before he was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital, where he died from the gunshot wounds.
Rentz lived at the address and was reportedly returning from a nearby store when the shooting occurred, according to the release.
Police found multiple shell casings at the scene. A police dog searched the scene and found a pistol near the entrance of the Pine Ridge neighborhood, according to the release. The gun was fully loaded and believed to be the one that killed Rentz.
As of now, there is no information pinpointing a possible suspect, according to the release, but officers are working to find the shooter. GPD will increase patrols in the area.
The kind of pistol used in the shooting is unusual, according to the release, and police are asking the public to reach out with information that could help solve the case.
