The color red bled all over Facebook’s blue and white homepage Tuesday.

The Human Rights Campaign, an organization that works to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans, asked social media users to show their support for marriage equality by making their profile photos a red HRC logo. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of the United States began hearing oral arguments for two cases regarding same-sex marriage.

The logo, which is normally blue with a yellow equal sign, was modified into a red version. HRC posted a Facebook status Monday afternoon urging followers to change their profile photos to the modified logo. As of Tuesday afternoon, the original image had been shared more than 100,000 times, according to the organization’s website.

“The Internet is awash in a sea of red — the color of love,” said HRC Director of Marketing Anastasia Khoo in a press release.

Annie Horneland, a marketing director for UF’s Pride Awareness Month, changed her profile photo.

“It shows a visible presence that people care about this cause,” said the 21-year-old microbiology junior. “My Facebook page is red.”

Horneland, who identifies as a lesbian, said she is happy to see both gay and straight people supporting the LGBT community.

UF student Darius A. Hands also changed his profile photo.

“I am a huge, huge, huge supporter,” said the 22-year-old business management senior.
