The No. 5-ranked No. 5 seed Florida women’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a 5-0 sweep of Bethune-Cookman on Friday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville.

The Gators clinched the doubles point in an 8-2 victory, with sophomore Spencer Liang and freshman Peggy Porter defeating BCU’s Maria Garoz-Moreno and Alejandra Vidal.

From there, Florida spent the next hour making ease of the Wildcats in singles play.

The Gators earned first set wins on all six singles courts, starting with No. 3-ranked freshman Brooke Austin defeating Mina Matsuba 6-2, 6-0.

“I thought we were super sharp today,” head coach Roland Thornqvist said in a release. “Clearly we were ready to play someone else, they were just ready to take it out on somebody else. There was great energy, we made good decisions. The little things we’ve been practicing the last two-and-a-half-weeks, we implemented almost all of them, so I was very pleased today.”

UF’s victory sets up a second round matchup with No. 24 Georgia Tech on Saturday at 1 p.m. GT defeated Wichita St. in an earlier matchup Friday in Gainesville.
