Sometimes it's funny to remember that states like South Dakota still exist when they're brought into the news.
And sometimes it's even funnier to read why they're in the news.
This week, a high school near Sioux Falls, S.D., banned a bracelet aiming to promote cancer awareness - a bracelet that does so with the slogan "I love boobies."
The brazen bracelets have caused controversy in other states across the country, including our very own Sunshine State.
The South Dakota girl accused of a major dress-code violation worse than those "Female Body Inspector" T-shirts has a history of breast cancer in her family, and she says she was simply trying to bring attention to the issue afflicting her family.
The issue at hand is not whether people love boobies - clearly a vast majority do - but whether school-aged children maintain their right to free speech within a public school setting.
Clearly, they don't.
This very same issue became national news when Gainesville children came to school with T-shirts that said "Islam is of the Devil."
And although the issues of boobies and supposed Satanic Muslims are a little bit different, the concept is the same. We doubt a little bosom-loving bracelet action distracted students, and we support the cause behind the bracelets as well as a student's right to express their beliefs as they so choose.
All in all, we want to save the Ta Tas as much as anyone else. And, really, there's not much more to write about South Dakota if we're not talking about Mount Rushmore.
