The teams at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship on Monday all had a common enemy: the rain.
The first of two days at the tournament in West Point, Mississippi, was delayed due to a morning rain delay that eventually led to playing through the effects.
Play suspended for the day during Round 2 due to weather conditions.
Florida as a team shot four-under-par through part of Round 2 to secure a share of third place.
The Gators sit at three-under-par for the tournament, four strokes off the lead.
"They're really working hard and they're buying into what JC (Deacon) and I are teaching them," assistant coach John Handrigan said in a release.
After a delayed start, the Florida men’s golf team shot 5-under-par to take an early lead through five holes and through the front nine, the Gators shot 6-under-par.
Everything took a turn for the worse when senior J.D. Tomlinson was the only player who shot under par on the back nine holes. The Gators totaled 11 bogeys, two double bogeys and an eight-shot par four by freshman Alejandro Tosti on the back nine.
Despite some poor play, Tosti was able to birdie three of his final six holes to end the round at three-over-par.
The Gators were led in round one by seniors Eric Banks and Tomlinson who both shot under-par for the round and placed inside the top-10 at the end of the round on Monday.
The team was in fourth position after shooting a combined five-over-par heading into the second half of day one.
Heading into round two, the Gators again came out firing, shooting five-under-par through each of the players’ first five holes.
Tomlinson and Banks are both sitting at 4-under-par for the tournament and are tied for fifth after Day 1.
Tosti is tied for 31st through part of Round 2 after shooting 2-over-par for the tournament, sophomore Ryan Orr shot 3-over-par for a share of 37th, and junior A.J. Crouch rounds out the five for the Gators at 4-over-par.
The Gators return to action today for the remainder of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship and will try to improve upon their third place standing.
