Today is not only election day for the Florida Republican Presidential Preference Primary, but it is also election day for two seats on the Gainesville City Commission.
After long hours of sign-holding, hand-shaking and debating, residents will have a chance to choose who will fill the Gainesville City Commission at-large 1 and District 1 seats.
The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
All registered voters can vote at their designated precinct, which can be found at www.votealachua.com under the "My Voter Information Page," said Pam Carpenter, county supervisor of elections. The website also has a list of candidates.
Voters should bring a valid photo I.D. with a signature, she said. Gator 1 Cards will be accepted.
Only registered Republicans will have the primary on their ballots.
Carpenter said she encourages everyone to go out and vote, especially because the city elections are bipartisan.
"We hear a lot of rumbling sometimes about how our government is working," she said. "Voting is our way of giving direction, be it on the municipal, state or federal level."
Mercedes Young, a 20-year-old telecommunication management senior, said voting in city elections is even more important than voting for the president.
