For one night, the stars will dance to their own soundtracks.
On Saturday, the lights of the Santa Fe College Planetarium will sync with local band Morningbell’s sixth studio album “Boa Noite,” which is Portuguese for “good night,” as a listening party before its official release May 21.
The band, which consists of Travis Atria on guitar and vocals, Eric Atria on bass guitar, Stacie Atria on keyboard and Chris Hillman on drums, has toured the U.S., performing at SXSW in Austin, Texas and Bonaroo music festival in Manchester, Tenn.
“Boa Noite” has a broad and vibrant sound. In the album, rap influenced drumbeats and romantic, classically influenced orchestral instruments.
“I wanted it to be kind of grand in scope,” Travis Atria said.
Morningbell was formed in 2004 after the Atria brothers left Miami to move to Gainesville. The brothers learned to play the guitar together and have always enjoyed playing music together.
“It was just natural for us to be in a band together, since we share so many of the same influences,” Travis Atria said.
Morningbell prefers to release and record its albums independently and schedule its shows without the aid of a music label.
“For every person involved, that’s one degree of control that is taken away from you,” he said.
Morningbell’s psychedelic sound is often supplemented at its live shows with lights set up by Eric Atria, who operates them with his feet as the band plays.
Sometimes during shows, the band will also organize a moustache contest in which the audience member with the best moustache wins a prize.
“We like to give people many reasons to enjoy our show,” Travis Atria said.
The band has been preparing for the release of “Boa Noite.” Tickets to the planetarium shows, are available for presale at the band’s website, www.morningbellonline.com. The band will also play the album live April 12 at High Dive.
