The UF baseball team is hoping a student will step up and hit it out of the park.
On Monday, the University Athletic Association began accepting entries to name the McKethan Stadium student section. The entry deadline is today.
“We had a planning session with head coach Kevin O’ Sullivan and decided this was a good way to get the students involved,” said Martin Salamone, UAA assistant athletic director for marketing.
“The entry process just started, and we roughly have already 130 suggestions. It’s been wonderful,” Salamone said.
GatorZone.com will post the finalists’ entries, selected by a UAA committee, on Tuesday for students to vote until Friday.
The winner, to be named on Jan. 25., will receive an autographed baseball from O’Sullivan, Nike team gear and the chance to throw the first pitch of a game during the 2010 season, along with the honor of naming the student section.
“When I found out that they were allowing students to partake in the process, I knew I wanted to help,” UF senior Clyde Darville said. “‘Field Flock’ and ‘The Rowdy Crowd’ are just a few things off the top of my head.”
Since opening in 1988, McKethan Stadium at Perry Field is one of the top baseball stadiums in the nation, according to GatorZone.com.
“It’s all about students and this community,” Salamone said. “Here is an opportunity for a great stadium to have a name and give the students ownership.”
