Seniors Anna Danilina and Josie Kuhlman advanced on to the second round at the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Singles Championships on Wednesday.
Danilina’s round of 64 match put her up against California’s Olivia Hauger. While the first set was close ‒ Danilina edged it out with a 7-5 win ‒ she was on cruise control for the second set as she shut out Hauger 6-0. Danilina will face off against Texas’ Anna Turati, who bested Kuhlman at a dual meet earlier this year, at 8 a.m Thursday.
Kuhlman’s match put her up against South Alabama’s Alexandria Stiteler. Stiteler wouldn’t go down without a fight as Kuhlman barely took the first set and dropped the second before a winning effort in the tiebreaking set, winning the match 7-6, 4-6, 6-2. She will face Stanford’s Emily Arbuthnott at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Danilina and freshman Victoria Emma will also be gearing up for the first round of the doubles championship Thursday, where they’ll face Oklahoma State’s Vladica Babic and Sofia Bianco at 1:30 p.m. Danilina and Emma both played Babic in doubles play on Feb. 7 during the team’s dual meet against Oklahoma State in a winning effort.
