An official proposal for block tuition has emerged from the hands of UF’s administration.
UF Provost Joe Glover has submitted a proposal to the Board of Trustees that aims to set a flat tuition rate for full-time students at the cost of 15 credit hours, instead of the current pay-per-credit-hour system.
The Board of Trustees is set to vote on the issue at its Dec. 9 and Dec.10 meetings. If approved then, the Board of Governors would have to approve the proposal next semester before the policy is implemented in the fall of 2011.
According to the meeting materials, UF charged blocked tuition until 1974, when the State University System switched to charging tuition on a per-credit-hour basis.
To cope with the likely increase in enrollment, the administrators say increased revenues would be invested in providing additional seats in courses and hiring more faculty and advisers.
Had the university been under block tuition this semester, the increased revenues would have totaled about $4.6 million, which is enough money to hire about 40 junior tenure-track faculty.
