National census hiring in Gainesville

The local census office is calling all UF students to get involved in the upcoming 2010 census, which ends April 1.

Norm Sassner, the local census office manager, said part-time jobs as census takers, supervisors and crew leaders are still available.

Sassner urged locals to get involved in this year’s census.

“They know the neighborhood and they know the community, making it easier for them to gather information than a stranger in a particular area,” Sassner said.

Gainesville spokesman Bob Woods said this year’s census questionnaire will have 10 questions on it. The topics covered include race, gender, age and number of occupants per household, Woods said.

But even those without homes will be counted.

“During a given time, we will actually go out and do a headcount and try to gather as much information from the homeless as we do from [homeowners],” Sassner said.
