Anyone who wants to learn more about Indian dances and culture can do so at UF’s Hindu Cultural Society’s Spring Charity Garba tonight.
The free event will feature the traditional Indian dances of Garba, Raas and Bhangra in the Reitz Union Ballroom from 8 p.m. to midnight.
“It’s really just a big dance party,” said Krishna Dipnarine, president of the society.
Group sessions will be offered to help newcomers learn the dances, said Reenal Patel, the society’s treasurer.
“It’s very interactive,” Patel said.
There is no dress code for this event, but Dipnarine said several of his non-Indian friends borrow clothes from him to get into the spirit.
“It really is a culture shock for someone who has never been before,” Patel said.
“We’re hoping to get a diverse group of people at this event,” Patel said.
The Gator Bhangra Team, a competitive dance team at UF, will also be at Garba to present a surprise performance.
While there is no entry fee, the society is asking that attendees bring a nonperishable canned or boxed food item, which will be donated to Bhutanese refugees in Jacksonville.
“I guess you could say we’re dancing for a cause,” Dipnarine said.
