Earth Day is coming early this year, at least at UF.

Although Earth Day is not until April 22, UF will be celebrating on Friday. The UF Office of Sustainability has expanded its Earth Day festivities this year in hopes of getting students to be more involved.

UF President Bernie Machen will be on the Plaza of the Americas at 11:30 a.m. to give his annual State of Sustainability at UF address.

Following his address, the Office of Sustainability will be presenting the Sustainable Solutions Awards, which are given to those who have made an effort to increase sustainability on campus.

There will be games, trivia and information about sustainability on the Plaza of the Americas in order to attract student attention.

“We try to have a variety of ways to get people involved,” said Ashley Pennington, outreach coordinator for the Office of Sustainability. “Getting informed is that first big step because you can figure out what your passion is.”

Pennington said she hopes this year’s Earth Day events will attract more students than ever before.

“This is one way they can get involved, and hopefully it will be an opportunity to reflect on what the future holds for the upcoming year,” she said.  “We can all be a part of that movement.”
