Pink shirts, pink plates, pink napkins and even pink M&M’s filled the Gainesville Place clubhouse Friday night.
About 70 people went to the clubhouse to play pool, sing karaoke and raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a breast cancer foundation dedicated to raising money for research and promoting women’s health.
About $500 was raised at the party.
The event was sponsored by the UF chapter of Circle K International, a Kiwanis-affiliated college service and leadership organization.
During the event, Michelle Gumz, a postdoctoral assistant in the College of Medicine’s division of nephrology, shared the story of her mother’s fight against breast cancer.
Gumz’s mother died from breast cancer in 2008, and Gumz said she was a tenacious woman who was active in the community.
“She lost her hair but never missed a day of work or lost her sense of humor,” Gumz said.
Gumz stressed the importance of raising money and awareness about the disease.
Marsha Cohen, co-service chair of Circle K, said she wanted to put on the event because of the high number of people who have a connection to breast cancer.
“It’s something that touches and affects so many people,” Cohen said.
