Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a local man Tuesday morning after he reportedly spit on a jail inmate while already serving time for past crimes.

About 1:25 a.m. Tuesday, Yomi C. Williams, 19, walked outside a nearby jail cell in the Alachua County Jail and spit on a 19-year-old inmate on the other side, according to a police report.

He was found guilty on June 1 after a March incident when he reportedly broke into a woman’s home and ransacked her bedroom and her daughter’s bedroom, according to a Gainesville Police report.

Williams later told authorities he never spit on the inmate. He claimed to be whispering to the inmate and avoiding detention deputies, according to the report.

Surveillance footage showed Williams walking to the inmate’s cell, getting close to a crack near the side of its door, making a nervous movement and leaving, according to the report.

Williams also partnered with two 17-year-old boys in April 2014 to beat a Gainesville delivery driver with a brick and steal his pizzas, Gainesville Police Department spokesman Ben Tobias wrote in an email.

He said Williams is not suspected of hitting the driver, but he did help plan the robbery.

Deputies charged Williams for battery by a person detained in a jail facility, which is a third-degree felony.
