As Catholics across the globe hold hands and sigh in relief that the latest male-molesting mishap wasn’t one of their own, Christians are again left with an unfortunately misrepresented image of their religious leaders and their questionable habits.

After four men filed lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct last week, the leader of a Georgia megachurch said Sunday that he’ll fight the charges and be back in the pulpit soon.

Maybe Bishop Eddie Long should rejoin the church, which held Coretta Scott King’s 2006 funeral, in the pews.

Maybe a little preaching is just what Long needs.

We didn’t go through seminary or even take many theology classes, but we’re fairly certain seducing teenage men is at least frowned upon in that Jesus guy’s teachings.

And while preaching in a church where one of Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughters also serves as a reverend, we’re ashamed Long used the metaphor of David fighting Goliath in which Long compared himself to the former King of the Jews.

Like we said, we’re not religious experts. We don’t frequent the confessional.

And we don’t often have cravings for a Eucharist with our coffee and crumpets.

But at least we know the difference between right and wrong.

And we’re ashamed a religion — any religion — that preaches love and kindness will again be dragged through the mud at the hands of a misguided religious leader.

We guess it’s too late to ask,“What would Jesus do?”
