College of Medicine professor, 53, dies of cancer

An associate professor of ophthalmology at UF's College of Medicine died Wednesday at Haven Hospice in Gainesville.

James Doyle, 53, faced a longtime battle with cancer, according to a College of Medicine news release.

Doyle's time at UF began in graduate school, where he earned his doctorate in pharmacology in 1982 and later earned his medical degree.

He joined the faculty in 1992, becoming the medical director for the UF Eye Clinic at Shands at UF in 1995. He was named director of the department of ophthalmology's clinical research program in 2004, the news release stated.

Doyle also worked as a staff ophthalmologist at the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the release said.

His work brought him honors, such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Career Achievement Award in 2000 and a UF College of Medicine Faculty of the Year honor in 1999.
