Not many students showed up to the District 3 forum on Thursday, but what can you expect when there’s a basketball and baseball game on the same night?
The forum, hosted by UF’s Student Government, talked a lot about bar access and how to keep apartment cheaper. Since I am a student, I’m not saying that these are the No. 1 things on our minds, but they do play a role.
In terms of keeping apartment rates low, the candidates had this to say:
Susan Bottcher: Apartment fees, especially redecoration fees, need to be addressed. She did not offer specifics on how to address this, but she only had a few minutes to respond.
Rob Zeller: If you keep rates low for the people who own the apartments, then they’ll be able to keep rates low for students who rent the apartments. Fire assessment fees especially are factored into students’ rents.
Ozzy Angulo: Wants to make sure there are protections for students who aren’t well-informed about certain fees. Wants to limit “predatory towing.”
The candidates agreed that it would be a good idea to allow bars to stay open until 3 a.m. as long as they stop serving alcohol at 2 a.m. They all said making people leave bars right after last call is dangerous.
