The construction of a solar-powered house and an update of the activities and supplies in the pediatric waiting area of Shands Children’s Hospital are just some UF ideas vying for $15,000 through the Pepsi Refresh Project.

The ideas competing to receive funding are determined by an online vote on the Gator 1 Central website.

Ten ideas are in contention in two categories, with five competing for $15,000 and the others for $5,000.

Dance Marathon, the organization that organizes the annual spring event, is in the running for the larger grant, which it plans to use to update the pediatric waiting center at the Shands Children’s Hospital.

According to a statement by the organization’s chairman, Kenny Brighton on the project’s website, the grant money would be used to buy supplies needed for volunteers to host activities and crafts for children waiting for surgery.

The update would also include a flat-screen TV and family-friendly DVDs.

The Wildlife Graduate Student Association is one of the organizations seeking the smaller grant. The group wants to develop a recycling challenge program for local middle and high schools, with funds going toward buying recycling bins, promoting the challenge and creating an incentive program.

Voting ends on Nov. 23. For more information and to vote, visit the Gator 1 Central website at www.bsd.ufl.edu/G1C.
