Hello Gators,
Today, I step into office at a time when being a Gator is different than we’ve ever seen. However, 10 percent of life is what happens to you, while 90 percent is how you respond to it. With that, I am excited to announce five new initiatives which serves as a means of improving our Student Body’s current situation during these challenging times.
First, Student Government will allocate resources to help support Aid-A-Gator. As many of you know, Aid-A-Gator provides relief to those students demonstrating financial need. With the economic downturn continually worsening, it is crucial now more than ever that eligible students receive financial relief.
Second, our administration is collaborating with off-campus housing to lobby for rent relief for students facing financial hardships. This partnership will strive to allocate financial aid for students demonstrating need on an application basis.
Third, the Accent Speakers Bureau will host virtual programming events throughout the summer. As we adjust to the new normal of social distancing, our administration would like to provide positive entertainment for our Student Body to look forward to. Whether it be focused on mental health, or information on COVID-19, or just fun entertaining speakers, our team wants to ensure you have outlet.
Fourth, Student Government will work with the Hitchcock Field & Fork Pantry to ensure students still in Gainesville are receiving the basic essentials. We understand that long lines and public exposure inhibit your ability to make it to the grocery store. However, students are encouraged to order food online for pickup, entirely free at the Field & Fork Pantry.
Fifth, I will host a virtual town hall in May to hear from you. In order to better advocate for our students, it’s important to hear your concerns. Keep up with the SG website and social media for updates regarding the town hall and how you can join.
We are all a part of the Gator Nation. We are resilient. UF has withstood the test of time, and each challenge has brought us closer together. COVID-19 won’t change that. If you wish to speak about your concerns, do not hesitate to reach out!
