When computer science and engineering senior Bryan Dubno was a freshman, he felt overwhelmed by UF's large campus.
That's why when he wanted to create an iPhone app in October 2009, he decided to make one for freshmen seeking the same UF resources he was. Those resources included a UF map, a UF-related event calendar, news and a directory of professors. Since then, more than 14,000 people have downloaded the free app, called UFmobile, Dubno said.
Last Thursday, Dubno released an updated version of UFmobile, introducing a class schedule importer, a Facebook-wall-like feature and augmented reality, which allows users to aim their devices' cameras at buildings to identify them. About 5,000 users updated the original app, and about 1,200 new users downloaded the new version, he said.
Fifth-year mechanical engineering major Victor McCormack downloaded the original and new versions, but he said the wall and building identifier are his favorite features.
"It's everything I need for being a UF student in one app," McCormack said.
