Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Janine Plavac to the Alachua County School Board Friday, filling the latest vacancy on the five-member board.

Plavac is the director of the Health Sciences Institute at St. Francis Catholic High School in Gainesville. She previously served as chair of the Gainesville High School Advisory Council and was a member of the Alachua County Superintendent Search Committee.

According to the press release, Plavac holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Miami.

It took nearly four months to fill the empty seat. Previous board member Kay Abbitt resigned in December due to a conflict of interest after becoming interim director at Boulware Springs Charter School following the previous director's unexpected passing.

Plavac’s start date and plans for her term on the board were not immediately available. ACPS Spokesperson Jackie Johnson did not respond in time for publication.
