With a vibrant blue sky and a cool breeze blanketing Gainesville, the Florida Gators (8-5) looked to extend their winning streak and to grab a fourth-straight conference win over a higher-ranked opponent. Looking to continue its own recent dominance and remain undefeated in conference play, Texas (12-2) arrived ready for the challenge on Sunday morning.
In doubles, Texas broke UF sophomores Henry Jefferson and Jeremy Jin early and the pair quickly fell behind 3-0 to junior Lucas Brown and sophomore Timo Legout, the 11th ranked doubles pair in the nation. The deficit was ultimately too much for the Gators to overcome as they lost 6-2 on court two.
UF sophomore Kevin Edengren and senior JanMagnus Johnson kept pace with freshman Sebastian Eriksson and senior Pierre-Yves Bailly on court three to even doubles play at one game apiece. The Gators won the match 6-3 and fired up the venue when they broke the Longhorns in the eighth game en route to victory.
Junior Tanapatt Nirundorn and sophomore Adhithya Ganesan were able to steal a game early on from junior Sebastian Gorzny and freshman Oliver Okakaar on court one and never took their foot off the gas in their stunning 6-3 victory. By snagging the doubles point for the Gators, the pair got the crowd on its feet and energized the team, building momentum heading into singles.
After snagging an improbable point and handing Texas its first doubles loss in conference play, Florida looked to carry its momentum in singles. However, Texas, a juggernaut in singles, came out hot, ready to battle for every point.
Texas didn’t take long to even the score 1-1 as Florida freshman Niels Villard was thoroughly outplayed by Brown in straight sets on court six. The Frenchman was simply outmatched in his 6-0, 6-0 loss.
Nirundorn couldn’t overcome Ojakaar on court five as the latter bested him in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to give Texas the edge.
Johnson was pushed to his limits on court three by No. 58 Bailly as the Flem took set one 6-3. The Gator was defeated from there, dropping set two 6-0 as Texas took a 3-1 lead.
Ganesan’s loss to No. 7 Legout on court one clinched the match for the Longhorns. Unable to stop his ranked opponent’s momentum or build any of his own, Ganesan fell in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 as Texas took a 4-1 lead.
The final two matches continued play as Jefferson defeated No. 33 Texas junior Jonah Braswell in straight sets. After a 6-3 victory in set one, Jefferson broke the former Gator in the ninth game to win set two 6-4 in a statement victory over a top-35 singles opponent.
No. 61 Jin went to three sets in his battle with No. 15 Gorzny on court two, eventually losing 6-3, 0-6, 7-6(3). After an impressive 6-3 victory in the first set, Jin was swept in set two 6-0. Gorzny had the momentum from there but was forced into a third set tiebreaker by the Australian. Jin battled hard but came up short 7-3 as Texas sealed a 5-2 win.
After accruing 7 straight home wins and a four-game win streak, Florida’s seemingly magical start to SEC play and undefeated home record was thwarted by Texas. However, coach Adam Steinberg is proud of how his team started conference play this season (3-1) and how they battled for Sunday’s doubles point.
“We did a great job in the doubles… that was really nice to see, but I know we can play better,” Steinberg said.
Despite a tough loss to a strong opponent, Florida is keeping its head held high coming out of this homestand and is setting its sights on Norman, Oklahoma. The Gators will travel to face the Oklahoma Sooners in a challenging road matchup Thursday. The evening matchup will be a great road test for Florida allowing it to showcase resilience and further prove its dominance in the SEC.
“Excited for Oklahoma, another great team, one of the best teams in the SEC for sure, coach Crowell does a great job…it's going to be a tough environment”.
