While Thanksgiving in a college city can feel like a ghost town for students, the city of Gainesville doesn’t lack community on the feast day. Look no further than these five events throughout the rest of November.
Germain’s Friendsgiving
Germain’s Friendsgiving is a cherished Gainesville tradition, bringing together friends and community members for a festive meal. This year, the event is scheduled for Nov. 23 at 6:00 p.m., located next to Flashbacks Recycled Fashions and Sunshine Records at 220 NW Eighth Ave.
Thanks to several local sponsors, like Serpentine Plants and Provisions and Goldenrod Parlor, attendees can enjoy free music, drinks and food.
Simon McClung, the director of operations at Germain’s, said the event is intended for everyone to come together, not just those in need. Last year, the chicken sandwich restaurant was able to serve 1,500 free plates to the community. This year, it’s aiming to double that, McClung said.
From longtime residents to newbies to the area, Germain’s Friendsgiving offers a warm and welcoming environment to celebrate the holiday season. McClung said he’s most excited to see everyone’s faces as the store nears its second anniversary.
“We've met a lot of people along the way, and not everybody can come out as regularly, it tends to bring everybody out,” he said. “Just getting to see friendly faces that we haven't seen in a while and meeting new people is definitely the highlight.”
The restaurant will be closed Nov. 22 to prepare for the feast.
Friendsgiving Thanksgiving at Bo Diddley Plaza
For those who enjoy a more casual, outdoor environment, Friendsgiving at Bo Diddley Plaza is worth checking out. Food trucks and live music set the tone for a laid-back evening.
The event is a great way to enjoy a meal while soaking up Gainesville’s cool November weather. On Nov. 23, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the event advertises providing a warm holiday meal for anyone in need or without a table for the holiday.
“Our LGBTQIA+ friends, our unhoused friends and anyone else who won't have a table for Thanksgiving... we want you at our table,” wrote Amy Jane Trask, the event’s organizer, in a Facebook post.
The Florida Outdoor Learning Collective Farm Thanksgiving Potluck
On Thanksgiving evening, Gainesville residents are invited to the Florida Outdoor Learning Collective Farm’s casual potluck and social gathering designed to foster community and connection. The dinner will take place on Nov. 28, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 3640 SE 15th St., with dinner served at 6 p.m.
Open to all, the potluck encourages attendees to bring any dish they’d like — homemade recipes, store-bought items or leftover Thanksgiving meals. Organizers emphasized the focus is on sharing rather than formality, creating a low-pressure environment for participants to enjoy the holiday.
“This is about bringing people together,” said FOLC’s Farm in a statement. “You don’t have to know anyone beforehand or bring anyone along. Just show up, and you’ll find friendly faces.”
The family-friendly gathering will be held outdoors on a screened porch, so guests are advised to dress for the weather. Event organizers ask community members to bring their own plates, utensils and cups to minimize waste. Admission to the event is free, but it's advised to RSVP on Facebook or email to help with preparations.
In addition to food, the evening promises an opportunity for entertainment. Attendees are encouraged to bring musical instruments, games or stories to share with the group.
Bread of the Mighty Free Food Distribution
Looking to give back this Thanksgiving? Bread of the Mighty Food Bank is hosting a special food distribution event on Nov. 25 at its main facility on 325 NW 10th Ave. The free drive-thru food distribution begins at 9:30 a.m.
Volunteers are needed to help sort and distribute food to families in need.
Pomodoro Cafe Thanksgiving feast
Mix things up this Thanksgiving with a visit to Pomodoro Cafe. Known for its Italian-American menu, the cafe puts its own spin on the holiday feast. Visitors can find turkey alongside pasta dishes, making it a fun option for anyone craving a little variety.
