Like an intricately woven quilt, the key to any community is honoring and highlighting the shared experiences that bind us together despite our differences in background. The Alligator always seeks to create equitable, accessible coverage of the UF and Gainesville communities, stitching together well-loved and worn traditions with the issues facing us today.

Approximately 12% of the Gainesville population and 21% of UF’s student population identify as Hispanic or Latino, reflective of the nationwide 19%. Despite the prevalence of these communities, the newsroom often leaves rich, engaging stories untold.

This edition features 18 stories in English and Spanish, from a profile of Gainesville’s beloved La Cocina de Abuela to a look at how Alachua County Public Schools hopes to solve its ELA proficiency gap between white and Hispanic students. Our primary goal was to highlight and amplify the voices of UF and Gainesville’s Spanish-speaking community in an accessible format.

While the breadth of experiences facing the Spanish-speaking community could not nearly be captured in a single edition, increasing the accessibility and equity of our coverage is a goal the Alligator strives to improve with each story told.

While this edition highlights Gainesville’s Spanish-speaking community, you can read El Caimán, the Alligator’s permanent Spanish section in all weekly editions.

The Editorial Board consists of Editor-in-Chief Aidan Bush, Engagement Managing Editor Valentina Sandoval, Digital Managing Editor Diego Perdomo and Senior News Director Peyton Harris.
