A suspect was arrested by the Gainesville Police Department Tuesday after attempting to rob the Bank of America on West University Avenue.

The suspect, not yet identified by GPD, feigned he had a weapon inside the bank and began to steal customers’ wallets after the bank refused to give him money, GPD spokesperson David Chudzik said.

“We set up a perimeter around the area — pretty wide perimeter — here of several blocks, and we actually apprehend[ed a] suspect a few blocks away,” Chudzik said.

The suspect was taken into custody at NW Third Ave and NW 12th Drive, behind the Publix, and positively identified by witnesses to GPD, Chudzik said.

The Bank of America was closed to the public as of early Tuesday afternoon, with police and workers still inside.
