Sabrina Obando, a 22-year-old UF graduate from Miami, was killed after being hit by a pickup truck on Tuesday at a crosswalk in the intersection of Northwest 8th Avenue and Northwest 10th Street.
Madison Bushloper, a 21-year-old UF nuclear engineering senior and Obando’s close friend, confirmed that Obando was killed at the crosswalk.
The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and Gainesville Police Department officers responded within minutes, GPD spokesperson Graham Glover said.
Obando, who was struck by a Ford F150 making a left turn, was immediately transported to UF Health Shands Hospital but died due to the injuries, according to a GPD press release.
She graduated with a bachelor's degree in art history, cum laude, from UF in December. Sabrina’s friends and family have surpassed their $10,000 fundraising goal, and have raised over $11,600 for funeral expenses on her GoFundme page, as of Friday.
As of Thursday, GPD is continuing to investigate this incident, Glover said. No charges or citations have been issued yet.
