One person is dead after a one-vehicle crash on West University Avenue Saturday.
At about 2:14 a.m., a vehicle traveling west at a high speed hit a raised median near the intersection of West University Avenue and 34th Street, according to a Gainesville Police Department press release.
The vehicle veered to the south side of the road and sidewalk where it struck a wall about 4 feet high before heading west and crashing into a traffic signal pole. The vehicle wrapped around the pole and set on fire, GPD spokesperson Graham Glover said.
The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, died as a result of the crash. Glover said no one else was hurt, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The driver has not been identified, and GPD is currently investigating the crash.
The traffic lights at the intersection of 34th Street and West University Avenue were broken in the crash and were not working for more than 12 hours. A portion of West University Avenue was also closed from about 2:15 a.m. to 8 a.m. The traffic lights were fully operational around 7 p.m. Saturday, just an hour before sunset.
