The Gators announced Mattias Siimar, a senior from The University of Michigan, will be joining the Florida tennis program as a graduate transfer for the 2021 season, the team announced via social media Wednesday.
Siimar, a native of Estonia, has been with the Wolverines for all four years of his college career. He was an International Tennis Federation (ITA) All-American in doubles in 2020, as well as being named to the second-team All-Big Ten.
Siimar has amassed a career record of 57-38 across all singles matches and a 64-24 overall record in doubles, including records of 35-27 and 28-14 in dual matches of singles and doubles, respectively.
Siimar has represented Estonia in the Davis Cup in nine matches since 2015, holding a 5-4 record. He’s made appearances in the Junior Boys’ Singles and Junior Boys’ Doubles at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open. He reached the doubles quarterfinals in Australia in 2016. He also reached the doubles semifinals at the 2016 European Junior Championships.
Siimar’s strength in doubles will definitely be appreciated in the Gators tennis program. Florida did not perform poorly by any means in their doubles matches this fall, but the team’s strength was clearly in singles. Siimar, who was ranked as high as No. 2 in doubles according to ITA with teammate Andrew Fenty in February-March of 2020, could make an already formidable Florida team even scarier for opposing competition.
