The number of people quarantined due to COVID-19 exposure at UF increased by more than 100 overnight.
Monday morning, the number of quarantined individuals jumped to 477, which is about a 30% increase from 370 on Sunday. This number accounts for “UF affiliates” — staff, faculty, students and other UF-related individuals — isolated because they tested positive for COVID-19 or were close contacts of those who tested positive.
Meanwhile, the UF Health Screen, Test and Protect dashboard hasn’t reported any new tests or positive cases at the Student Health Care Center or through the Return-to-Campus Initiative since Sunday.
The Alligator confirmed the locations of six of this week’s new cases: three in Jennings Hall and three in Cypress Hall.
Other confirmed cases include two in Hume, three in Fletcher, and three in Yulee.
The number of UF affiliates in quarantine has increased nearly every day since Sept. 1 except Friday, when no changes were seen.
UF has 600 beds available for isolated students, according to a statement posted on Facebook by the university Sunday evening. Only about 110 of UF’s rooms are currently being used, and the remaining people are quarantining off campus or at home.
COVID-19 cases are expected to increase following the Labor Day Weekend, according to a UF Facebook statement.
"The increase in positive cases we are seeing on campus this weekend is in keeping with what the University of Florida and UF Health anticipated and planned for,” the statement read. “We have resources in place to address the uptick in numbers, which will likely continue for some time in the wake of the holiday weekend.”
