Local health officials have confirmed Alachua County’s first death related to COVID-19.
Paul Myers, the administrator for the county health department, confirmed with the Alligator that the person who died was a 67-year-old woman. However, he declined to give additional details about her identity or death.
The county has a total of 223 confirmed cases of the virus and 29 hospitalizations as of this afternoon, according to the Florida Department of Health’s dashboard. However, the state dashboard hasn't been updated to reflect the county’s death announced today.
Until today, Alachua was the only county in the state with more than 200 confirmed cases of the virus and no related deaths.
