UF Health Shands Hospital had seven medical specialties ranked in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2019-20 “Best Hospitals.”

For the fifth year in a row, Shands is ranked in more adult and pediatric specialties combined than any other hospital in the state, said Ed Jimenez, Shands CEO, in an email.

Both nephrology and urology are ranked 24th in the nation. UF Health’s other ranked specialties include geriatrics in 37th place, diabetes and endocrinology in 40th place, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery in 40th, cancer in 42nd and pulmonology and lung surgery in 44th, he said.

Shands had six ranked adult specialties in the 2018-19 rankings, Jimenez said.

Shands’ urology practice achieved a national ranking, improving its position as a “high performing” program last year. It has achieved a U.S. News national ranking 11 times since 2005, Jimenez said.

“There are many other UF Health adult specialties with long histories of being among U.S. News & World Report’s ranked programs,” Jimenez said. “It highlights our dedication to our patients.

Li-Ming Su, a professor of urologic oncology and chair of the UF College of Medicine’s urology department said the improved ranking is due to the expanded urology services.

This includes the development of online and printed materials helping patients navigate their care at Shands and multidisciplinary care teams for urologic cancers and kidney stone patients, Su said.

“Our goal is to always provide the best service and outcomes to our patients and their families,” Jimenez said.

UF Health Family Medical Center opened in Bradford County on May 1.
