An Ocala man was arrested Friday after he allegedly killed a 53-year-old woman in the passenger seat while driving drunk in 2018, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Clifton Ray Raines, 33, was charged with vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence and causing serious injury while driving with a suspended license following the June 16 single-vehicle crash off of County Road 337 and Southwest 30th Avenue, according to an FHP report.
Frances Regina Grantham died at the scene of the crash, while Raines and the other passenger were taken to UF Health Shands Hospital.
Authorities believe Raines was northbound on County Road 337 and moved off the road when it began to curve. According to the report, Raines attempted to turn but hit a concrete drain culvert and flipped over. Grantham was ejected from the passenger window, ending up slightly under the roof of the vehicle.
Raines’ blood samples contained alcohol content values of .109 and .110 about four hours after the crash, according to the report. The legal level of blood alcohol content for someone over the age of 21 in Florida is .08. Raines’ blood also contained benzoylecgonine, an active compound found in cocaine that is only present in the body for up to four days after last use.
As of Saturday morning, Raines is being held at the Alachua County Detention Center on a bond of $400,000, according to county records.
