Driven by hunger, a Hawthorne man barreled down State Road 20 at 140 mph toward a Jacksonville Chipotle on Wednesday. However, his quest ended in handcuffs, rather than a burrito, after he caused a three-car collision.
Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Brett Pittman was on routine patrol of Southeast Hawthorne Road near 35th Street when Scott Patrick Sorenson, 37, sped past his marked patrol car in a BMW. Sorenson continued heading east changing lanes erratically. He passed two other marked patrol cars parked on the side of the road with their emergency lights on and failed to move over.
A high-speed chase ensued, during which Sorenson forced a dump truck and a passenger van to take evasive action from his path. Shortly before 2 p.m., Sorenson collided with two other vehicles.
Sorenson came to a stop after the accident but refused officers’ requests to exit his vehicle. He was forcibly removed by authorities.
While in custody, Sorenson claimed officers on the scene were terrorists and stated they had caught “the evilest motherf----- in the history of the United States of America,” according to the arrest report. He told officers he was on his way to Chipotle in Jacksonville. The report said he had trouble balancing and smelled strongly of urine during the investigation.
Sorenson was charged with a DUI, four counts of DUI damage to property or persons, reckless driving, fleeing police and resisting an officer.
Sorenson remains in custody in lieu of $85,000 bond.
